U.S. DOT launched the Marine Transportation System (MTS) initiative
in 1998 as the first real attempt to examine the MTS as an integrated
subsystem of the U.S. national defense system. It consists of
waterways, ports, and intermodal landside connections, as well
as vessels and vehicles for moving freight and people. DOT's
Maritime Administration and Coast Guard lead the initiative
in cooperation with ovher government and the private sector.
The MTS initiative is ensuring that America's marine transportation
system achieves the national focus required to support increased
traffic in the 21st Century. |

was chartered by the Department of Transportation in 2000 to
serve as a non-federal deliberative body to advise the Secretary
on matters relating to the Marine Transportation System (MTS)-
waterways, ports, and their intermodal connections. MTSNAC reports
to the Secretary of Transportation on the status of the MTS
and critical issues it faces, as well as recommendations for
actions the Council deems advisable. The Maritime Administration
sponsors the MTSNAC. |
